Hey kids, here’s the latest from folks from around the Highland area that I know about so don’t be mad if you aren’t in it

Not that anyone ever has been.

First up another one from The Ragazzi boys. Here’s Socially Awkward. May be a couple more to go, but I think we’ve had a fair bit of the set so far. Lucky people that we are.

Next up one from a band who are kind of on a development break, but stuck up a video anyway. Well I say video, it’s really audio. Here’s Fifi and Rodaidh with a cover of Halo by Beyonce. Nothing wrong with the odd cover and very good it is too.

Last video for today, second last bit of “news”. The boys from Last Summer Effect have a Christmas number with an accompanying video. And a press release, so I have words to say, which is nice. The song was originally started last year but not completed in time so they sat it on the back burner. The video and audio was recorded by the band themselves and a few friends. Credit where credit is due, so Katy Gilchrist and Jodie Macpherson provide backing vocals and Katy also did the filming. And recording engineer was Alice Black. I believe the song will also be available free for nothing. Here’s the video for Red and Gold. Looks like they had a blast filming it and that’s the whole point really. Always seem to be enjoying themselves this lot which is great. Yeah creative stuff is work, but it’s FUN work. Or should be.

On a side note, I’m still looking for a couple of Christmas tunes for Santa to play on his special when he does a takeover of my Christmas Eve/Day show. If you have something give me a shout at or via Facebook

Actually two things as one just appeared in front of my face. Tonight on BBC Alba they’ll be showing some highlights of this years Belladrum so watch that from 9PM and you may see some familiar bands. Well, probably lots of familiar bands but I mean locals. And finally, Sid Innes has gotten himself a web presence. Yay! Normally that name doesn’t have a link as he’s just got a profile and I try not to link to those. So go check him out.

That’ll do it, peace out y’all.

Man I’m white.

Hey ki…..know what, screw that. This could be huge so right to it. Wee scroll bar on my Facebook list is teeny…

Siiga has an ongoing thing where people take pictures of a Siiga sticker all over the joint, and they have been to some pretty remarkable places. SO he’s set up a tumblr page where they can appear. Want to join in? I have no idea how, contact Siiga for some stickers I’d guess.

Toby Michael’s Rolling Damned have started to get their merch on. If you go here you can pre-order a t-shirt with a zombie dude on a motorbike. There’s only 99 so hurry up! “99? But it says 100…” Yeah, but I want one so it’s 99. Don’t hurry too much either as I haven’t got any money until Friday. You can hurry on Saturday. There’s also a comic in the works! Think they’re the closest the Highlands has to Tenacious D. Only a matter of time before you can get a Jonny Gash figure.

Here’s a video from a young local musician I haven’t really heard much of yet. Her name is Bethany Wappler, she plays piano/guitar and sings, and this is an original piece called Unresolved Love. No singing, it’s an instrumental piano piece. And it’s bloody good!

Thousand Stars EP is almost finished. Better be, you have 3 and a half weeks before my radio show starts and I need stuff to play on it. It features the kind of stuff you’d expect if you’ve heard them before plus “shows we can flip the “Thousand Stars” sound and turn it on its head”. Intriguing…country and western yoddling number played on the flute then.

Barry Mackay and Ryan Golder may well have played their last gig as a duo. Bit shocking that. Oh wait, don’t panic! They’re getting a band together! So it’ll be the same kind of sound I’d think, but richer for having other things thrown in. I believe I’ve seen them play with some supporting instruments and it really works so it could be pretty damned good. That said if you get the chance to catch them “solo” ahead of the new line up then go for it.

Those mini videos for Rachel Sermanni‘s album tracks have continued to come out in my absence. I’m working my way through time here so this paragraph may have them all by the time I’m done. Little Prayer has some antics in a train station. Here is the clip for opening track Breathe Easy, it’s all stormy waves and vanishing letters. This clip is for my favourite track, The Fog (favourite video is still the Ever Since The Chocolate one though). Here is the video for Black Current, and it’s a trippy one. And if THOSE clips weren’t enough here’s a wee bit of Marshmallow Unicorn shot at The Bike Shop, wherever that is. And she also played Ever Since The Chocolate in the dark and scary darkness for RTTV sessions. Fits quite well really.

There’s an interview with Thurso rawk gawds Estrella over at Inverness Gigs. If you wanted to see them live then….you missed it. There’s a gig list up ^there you know, called The List, it’s semi decent.

Monster FM will shortly draw to a close. But some of it will live on for eternity, or at least a few years, thanks to the magic of the internets. Here’s the DJ set by local duo Them and Us. You know, there’s another Radio station that has a longer season (forever possibly, 2 years looks likely anyway) that could well be happy to have some DJs of your kind on board guys. They’ve also done a remix of Next of Kin by the excellent Miniature Dinosaurs because that’s what they do. Prefer the original myself but this has some damned fine moments.

In other electronic music news, Count Clockwork have stuck up a preview of Ozlide. I’m assuming that’s a track. They call them tracks in dance land right? I’m down with the kids I am.

Back to instruments being played loudly while someone screams. You know what that means right? Yup, Cleavers. This is the WHOLE DAMNED SET (maybe. 12 mins anyway) from Crowbar in Groningen, and it’s loud and good so it is.

Two bits and bobs from Netsounds Unsigned. First off it’s another introducing piece, this time about Aberdeen singer/songwriter Cara Mitchell. I’ll second the fact that you have to go to here show as Esperi is an amazing thing to see live. I’ll be there at Hoots unless something goes very wrong. And secondly they have a new podcast episode out. My friend, the lovely Anna Sweeney is in this one, as are locals Sienna Lights.

There’s a new track up from Naked Strangers, called Idiot Beat. Bit weird, almost disconcerting, but rather good along with it so that’s okay then. Wouldn’t listen in the dark.

What have James Mackenzie and Batman got in common? They’ve both been filmed at Inverness Airport! And that’s it. As far as I know…. Anyway, here is the video for Something I’m Not Telling You. Very good stuff.

Another new video, along with a warning. Don’t emulate rock groups. Not only do He Slept on 57 smash things, burn things and pollute the ocean in the video for Katy, Bar The Door but they also PLAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!!! Didn’t the Green Cross Code Man teach you boys anything?! Makes for a cracking video though.

And finally, two bits of Belladrum news. First off, the official highlight video is out. Looks like it was great craic, unfortunately I wasn’t there this year (or ever, never been to Bella, shock horror). And second, tickets for next year’s festival are now on sale. Check the official site for the various options and hopefully I’ll see you there.

WHEW, all caught up again. Bit calmer for the next week or two so should be able to keep up. Give us a like on Facebook and thanks very much for reading 🙂

Hey kids. Here’s what local bands have been saying for themselves/doing/releasing over the last couple of days.

Local band snapper and “doesn’t blog” blogger Houdi has been rather prolific over the last few days. He’s developed an obsession with The Outsiders feet, before getting round to describing his Bella experience. First Friday aaaaaaaaaaaand Saturday isn’t done yet, when I started writing I mistakenly thought I’d seen a link to it. It’s possible I was just confusing it with the piece on last nights Showcase and Mad Hatters action. Mine, minus the Hatters, is here. All, or at least the last two, posts by Houdi contain links to large numbers of pretty pictures.

While I’m linking things that other people have written, here’s Margaret Chrystalls review of the fifth Summer Showcase. My one is here but chances are you’ve already read it as it’s the most popular post on this site.

Give your eyes a break and your ears some work, The Ballachulish Hellounds have uploaded a “Lofi Jockgrass” (their words) track called Lonesome Without You. It went up 2 weeks ago yes, but first I’ve heard of it.

How about a couple of videos? First up Estrella teamed up with the RockIt! Dance belly dancers for a Do It Til’ We Drop video. Followed by a scrappy live recording of The Cleavers from their gig at the Ironworks on Wednesday. Sounds a bit ropy and thankfully they keep their bellies to themselves. I’ve so far failed to catch them live, must fix that sometime soon. I love how some of the suggested videos on the right are for a US politician…

It’s a long shot that people reading could use it, because geography, but would you like to see Rachel Sermanni playing at the Reading Festival? If so she has 2 tickets to give away. Just emailt (you’ll be added to her and Reading’s mailing list so forewarned) and a winner will be drawn on Wednesday the 22nd. You also get a signed copy of her new album, but don’t be a dick and enter just to get that.

Do you want to be an events co-ordinator when you fail to grow up? Bogbain Farm has a paid internship going. Brew at the Bog was extremely well planned and run so you could do worse for a learning experience than that place.

Aaaaaaaaand I’ll finish off with some gigs over the next couple of days. If you are reading this RIGHT AS IT GOES UP then you could do worse than head on over to Karma Lounge in Inverness. They’re balancing the Olympics karma by playing the great British rock that was largely ignored (or RAPED BY JESSIE J) during the closing ceremony. Alternatively head on through to Dingwall, go to The Mallard and check out Dougie Burns, The Oxides and Purple Divide who are hoofing it down from…Wick I think so may be a bit knackered.

If you AREN’T reading this right away and it’s either too late on Friday or early on Saturday, Dingwall is offering up two things and you can technically go to both. First off there’s the National Treasures Music Event at the National Hotel. In a vain attempt to get me interested in football, you can catch The Ragazzi playing, go watch County playing Celtic, then come back for some Last Summer Effect (accoustic style). Jokes on you, no way I’ll be up to make it to Dingwall by 11. Half 2 I can do though, so maybe some LSE and then probably (this is in case I fail to get through at all) some Slim Panatellas at The Greenhouse. You can do both, at least partially, as Rob is going to the match and they can’t play without him.

And if your in Inverness, saunter along to the Mark and Spencers general area and you’ll be able to catch dorec-a-belle playing to raise money for hospital radio (which is nice of them). And you’ll also be able to grab a copy of their CD, which is nice for you (review here).

That’s a whole lot of reading, looking, listening and going to there. PHEW! Remember you can subscribe to the site below, and there’s now a Facebook page where all the latest updates will post by internet magic. Now go tell your friends.

Hey kids. Here’s what local bands have been saying for themselves/doing/releasing over the last day or so. Actually 2 days.

There’s a Charlotte Church coming up at Bogbain Farm. They have one support act, these guys, and are looking for another. If you think you fit the bill then send Yvonne a link to your soundcloud or similar batch of music at Good luck!

The new Netsounds unsigned podcast is out featuring 7 tracks from the Belladrum Rockhopper sessions. I won’t bother listing them as there’s a list on that there page.

Speaking of Bella, there’s a Breaking News North video with heaps of interviews and performances from that there festival. So I’m told as I haven’t actually watched it yet due to my computer playing silly buggers. I’m sure (and assured) that it’s really good though, Bobby knows what he’s doing. Hell he was able to make ME look half decent.

Speaking of Bella and video, there’s another one out from Josephine Sillars. This time it’s Middle Class Pretenders. I fully expect that there’s a couple more to come but go enjoy that one for now.

Not speaking of Bella now, you can pre-order a copy of Abagail Grey’s EP Dark Wood right here. There’s only 600 going, signed stuff and that, good times. I’ll be ordering mine shortly so there’s only 599 now.

Estrella have published a new blog entry about they’re recent and upcoming rock god adventures, and a video of “Do It Til’ We Drop”. Bang yer head, throw some metal signs. RAWK.

The line up, possibly not the whole thing but plenty, for Jocktoberfest has been announced and….I’m not saying what it is as I’m giving that it’s own post. Sometime in the next day roughly, possibly tonight.

If you don’t have a copy of the Red Kites “Beat In Time” EP what’s wrong with you?! Well fix it! 200 new copies have arrived and are available right here. It’s WELL worth a couple of quid, lovely stuff. You can’t get a t-shirt now though as those are sold out, I’m wearing mine nyah nyah (glad you can’t see the pasta sauce stain…). New designs being worked on now though.

If you missed the showcase last night here’s a wee bit of Barry and Ryan. There’s a link to a review at the bottom of this page too (until it gets bumped down anyway). I neglected to link the artists in it so they are: Ailsa Jean Lyall Mathews, Barry Mackay, Ryan Golder, Dorec-a-belle and The Galipaygos. Sorted.

And that’ll do ya. Loads of people off to B-fest in Wick this weekend, not including me this year unfortunately. Have fun if your going. Hell have fun if you aren’t, it’s the weekend!
