Hey kids, here’s what’s been happening around and about and that.

A couple of interviews over at Inverness Gigs. First off, there’s a wee chat with Toecutter who have a line up change in the form of new front-man Dean Kernaghan, who I keep thinking is related to someone I know when he actually isn’t. There’s also this one with Skeleton Verse about their new album and stuff.

Abagail Grey is hard at work on a new EP, Snowflake Remember, but because she’s nice she’s released a track for all to hear early. It’s called Starling and it’s a haunting little number. Consider my appetite whet.

The Justice Never Sleeps blog has a post with a remix by Inverness….mixers? DJ? Have no idea how many are involved… Fighting Lightning. It’s a remix of Kimbra ft Mark Foster & A-Trak – Warrior. NO clue what the original sounds like. Again. I apparently know nothing about music, probably because I’m too busy listening to other music. I haven’t even seen Gungnam Style yet! I’ll be doing that once I’m done this. ANYWAY, I rather enjoyed this. I like the bass through line on it. Funky stuff, well done you/youse!

Defcon One chucked a wee post out for anyone who was a bit worried that something terrible had happened. They’re on a bit of a break at the moment, outlook doubtful, so that the remaining 3 members (bassist Duncan “Sexypants” Robertson, the middle bit is what I call him, left after Belladrum) can do some life things like work and study. Will they be back? Who knows. Hope so and I’m glad I caught them live a couple of times.

Not sure if I’ve linked all of the full on video intros to the songs on Rachel Sermanni‘s Under Mountains, but there’s an alternative. Here’s a video on Dutch site White Room with the lady herself telling you what each song is about. I like that sort of thing as I’ve mentioned before. Quite proud of the fact that she struggles a bit to describe The Fog. The universe clearly knew that I needed a favourite song of your’s so made it materialise, Rachel. There’s also a wee video of her performing To a Fox solo girl with guitar style. Thanks for filming this Mike Watts. Not a capella though, she’s playing the guitar.

There’s still a space or two on the Highland Metal Monster Mash bill. That’s the Friday before Halloween over at the Karma Lounge. If you fit the bill give Desecrator or the Karma Lounge a shout. And hurry up so I can write a preview piece!

Roadway start work on their next album on the 15th. That’s it, not a huge newsy paragraph. BUT, NEW ROADWAY ALBUM COMING! That is all.

And last but that just means it was most recent, Naked Strangers have stuck up a cover of Memories by Leonard Cohen. Enjoyable, retro, damned good stuff.

Thanks very much for reading, go give the Facebook page a like, support your local scene, laters!

Hey kids, here’s what’s been happening with local acts over the last….bloody ages. Haven’t done a news post in days as I’ve been galavanting about at festivals and that. Not sure if this will be a full on back up to speed update or not. I’ll cut it off at a certain point so it’s not as huge as the Jocktoberfest review. Should be back on track in a few days anyway. On with the news.

You can now get your hands on a copy of Abagail Grey‘s Dark Wood EP in HMV. I’ve got mine already so you can read a review here. Or just go buy it.

There’s no way that 5 days could have gone by without me having some Rachel Sermanni stuff to talk about. Here’s another Waltz video. Even if you’ve watched a couple, this one is really worth a look. Very beautifully shot around a very interesting tree, and Rachel is on fine form. Possibly the most fitting video I’ve seen actually, well done HibOO d’Live. Alternatively BETC did a rooftop session with her. So if you’d rather see Paris in the background that’s the one for you. It’s the first single off her album btw, hence all the sessions being Waltz.

The boys at Netsound Unsigned have added a new feature to their site. Every…well I don’t know how often, they’ll highlight a band that has been or will be on the podcast with a bit of a profile and stuff. First up it’s The Maginot Band, that’s a link to the article. No point linking a page as it’s in there. Nice idea guys 🙂

Speaking of Netsounds, throw in some goNorth, it’s a Rockhopper Session. Here’s rock gods KOBI playing All The Way in a caravan for your enjoyment. With brass section if you haven’t heard them that way before.

Bogbain Farm have landed themselves an award for being the Best Unusual Venue at the Scottish Event Awards. Can’t argue with that really, it’s a great place for some music and not a traditional venue in the least. Well done guys!

Time for another session track. This time it’s PAWS doing a Fatcat session for Brooklyn Vegan. Here’s Jellyfish. Sounds great and I’m looking forward to the album which is only a month away! Clash Music have also made Salem, the b-side to the bands latest single Sore Tummy, their track of the day. Nice choice, it’s a damned fine track.

Much like Miss Sermanni it wouldn’t be a news post without the Cleavers. New track up in their soundcloud, this one is called This Rain Will Never End. It’s a rough mix. Didn’t know they had any other kind! Only kidding guys, pretty much there though if you ask me.

Sticking with soundcloud, and this is a long one so I haven’t listened before posting but will right after, there’s a new Justice Never Sleeps mix from resident DJ Boomshank Redemption. As I’ve said before I’m not a big electronic music guy BUT I’m giving it a shot. If you are I’ve heard his stuff before and you’ll like it. And if THAT isn’t enough for you, his mix from Monster FM is also up. That’s a lot of music!

There’s a small chance that the whole set will be up here at some point, but there’s another video up from dorec-a-belle from their excellent showcase set. This is When You Said and it’s a lovely wee mellow tune.

I love the Oxides me. You should too. The sound is a little bit patchy on this video, Duncan (Front Room Unplugged) was right down the front after all and I know how loud it was there as I’m a wee bit in front of him, but it’s good enough to hook you in. Thanks for putting these videos up man, keep up the good work 🙂

After last week I now also love the Ragazzi me. You should too. Can’t really see them much/too well and it’s not the whole thing, but here’s some of Jelly from last weeks Battle of the Bands. Bloody good eh? I’ll have some more of that.

The Maginot Band have a new EP out called Peace and Quiet. I haven’t heard it yet but will be picking up, and therefore reviewing, a copy soonish. It’s available at all the usual electronic outlets and there’s no doubt links on their page there.

And I’ll finish off with this (yay, all caught up after all). If you missed Jocktoberfest you are a silly billy. Here’s a rough video of the main site, backing music is by the excellent Esperi who was the highlight of the fest for me. I’m in the video too, sporting my Team Kapowski shirt. And a second one that is unsullied by my presence.

Phew, loads of stuff there. Thanks for reading, please like the Facebook page, I’m all worded out now (you’ll probably be glad to hear)!

Hey kids. Here’s what local bands have been up to over the last day.

If like me you didn’t make it to The Greenhouse last Thursday for the open mic session but would still like to help the Red Hook Rapids in becoming Tennessee Bound (hahaha, I’m funny) you can do so here. My money isn’t where my mouth is YET but will be come pay day. Go chuck them a couple of quid.

As I wrote in this piece there’s two more showcases to go. The good fellas over at Netsounds Unsigned have put together a mix tape for you all which you can get here and listen the hell out of over the next couple of days.

Also ahead of the showcase you can have a wee read of Thousand Stars talking to Inverness Gigs. In the influences I’d say more the former than the later, they nearly fall in to arty nonsense when talking about why you should see them but not quite AND I didn’t know they had an EP! See I read/watch/listen to the stuff I’m writing about.

As you can tell by the rather large lack of coverage I’m not that big on electronic aka dance-though-it-has-100-genres-in-itself music. BUT that’s no reason not to give it a mention now and again, and I do like some. The guys over at Justice Never Sleeps should keep you well covered, though they aren’t limited to local stuff. It’s a male dominated industry (aren’t they all, right ladies? Men eh?) but they’ve done a piece highlighting 5 of the best Lady DJs. A quick scan and none of them are local. Do we have Lady DJs in these parts? Surely.

Not a lady but is a local DJ, Boomshank Redemption has a new track out. It’s called Air 29, it’s House apparently and I think it’s rather good actually. Well constructred, interesting wee bits and bobs throughout. Like I say, I like some don’t like others and I’m FAR from an expert. Generally get put off by the tracks that have some random auto-tune wifey singing over it if I’m honest. “Jimmy Jams featuring Alice D? WHO THE HELL IS ALICE D AND WHY WOULD I CARE?!” Moving on…

To another new track as it happens, this time of a heavily rocky vein. Cactus & Cardigan, who are a bit Primus-y in my limited experience of both, with….George Michael Cums Cobwebs. I swear sometimes so I can’t object to that title. Really want Marion to play it on the radio just so she has to dance around the title!

Rockers Estrella, who are probably the most prolific band on Facebook but they are on tour, have a couple of news updates as well. The first features a video asking you to vote for them in the Scottish New Music Awards (and while you are there you can also vote for a few other locals, you have until Saturday). The second piece announces that that belly dancing video for Do It Till We Drop will be featured in the London Tate Modern Art Gallery. Well done guys!

Some acts seem to be featured every day just now, so it’s time for some Rachel Sermanni. In this video you can see and hear her performing In The Hollow for Student Pocket Guide TV. Lovely stuff, nice wellies. I don’t normally bother linking Facebook pictures but she’s also just bought a new violin and she’s lovely (violins are girls Rachel).

Are you a fiddler….no wait, that doesn’t sound right. Are you a violinist, guitarist or cellist (should really be chellist…)? Are you completely perfect at whichever instrument it is that you play? Of course you aren’t, life is a learning process. Well the Blazin Fiddles and friends have a week long music school that should be right up your alley. It’s called Blazin’ In Beauly, it’s….in Beauly in October (I’m guessing tatty holiday time but I don’t GET tatty holidays) and if the website doesn’t have enough info and you have some questions then contact them at info@blazininbeauly.com or 0779 294 7269 and Bruce (I’m guessing) will be happy to answer whatever questions you have.

Abagail Grey has a rather entertaining blog at this site btw, so you should probably read that for random thoughts and stories. And if you visit the fanRX section of their page (link right to it in lieu of normal front page) you can download a copy of track Water as an EP taster.

Want an insight in to the life of rock stars? Can’t give you that. How about some young musicians pissing about a bit? Sorted. Purple Divide have a new video out for their song Escape featuring behind the scene and gig footage from the YMI tour right here. Good idea, well executed.

And that’ll do ya. Busier day than I thought! Now go like my Facebook page and tell all your friends would ya?

Oh and there’s now an email address, friedgoldmusic@gmail.com so if I’ve been missing your band or, and this is probably unlikely, you want to slip me some news for these posts drop us a mail. Cheers.
